Glucotron MR belongs to group of sulfonylurea derivatives. It lowers blood sugar levels by stimulating secretion of insulin by beta cells of Langerhans cells. Glucoton MR increases sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin and stimulates activity of intracellular enzymes. Gliclazide improves insulin production immediately after eating. Glucoton MR reduces risk of thrombosis of small vessels.
The drug is administered to adults only. The recommended initial dose is 30 mg (1 tab.). Dose should be corrected in accordance with the level of glucose in the blood after start of treatment. Each subsequent dose change can be undertaken after at least 2-week period of treatment. For maintenance therapy daily administration of one dose provides effective control of blood sugar level.
Glucoton MR can be administered only to the patients who can eat regularly, including breakfast, and meals include sufficient amount of carbohydrates. During treatment levels of blood and urine sugar should be controlled. Risk of hypoglycemia should be taken into account by the patients who take this medicine and they should be aware of it symptoms and be able to take necessary measures. Risk of hypoglycemia increases in the elderly patients, those who don’t receive enough food, in poor general medical condition, have adrenal or pituitary insufficiency. Possibility to take insulin should be taken into account when the patient plans to have surgery, got trauma or infectious disease. Co-administration with biguanides, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors or insulin is possible. Medicines with ethanol and alcoholic beverages should be excluded. Patients should be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and be cautious when drive a vehicle or operate mechanisms.
Do not take this medicine if you have insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type I), dabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic precoma and coma, severe renal and hepatic failure; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have hypersensitivity to the medicine and other sulfonylureas. Do not take it if you already take treatment with miconazole.
Possible side effect
Most common side effect is hypoglycemia. In rare cases nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, increased activity of AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase can occur. If you have anemia, allergic reactions such as itching, rash contact your doctor. These symptoms usually disappear when treatment is discontinued.
Co-administration with beta-blockers masks some of the symptoms of low blood sugar, such as palpitations and tachycardia. Non-selective beta-blockers mostly increase frequency and severity of hypoglycemia. Fluconazole increases risk of hypoglycemia. Simultaneous intake with danazol can decrease effectiveness of Glucotron MR. Simultaneous treatment with corticosteroids (for systemic, topical and external use), tetracosaktide, ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline (for intravenous infusion) raises level of glucose in the blood. When progestogens and Glucotron MR are co-administered, a diabetogenic effect of high doses of progestogens should be taken into consideration.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Symptoms of overdose is hypoglycemia. Its symptoms include dizziness, weakness, fast heart beating, excessive sweating, pale skin. Immediately take food which contains a lot of carbohydrates. You can also need change of diet and correction of dose to continue treatment with Glucotron MR. If suspected or diagnosed hypoglycemic coma then immediate injection of 50 ml of concentrated glucose solution (40%) is necessary. Then more diluted solution of glucose (5 %) is administered to maintain the necessary level of glucose in the blood. Careful monitoring should be carried out for at least the next 48 hours.
Store your medicines at room temperature between between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C). Store away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from pets.
